Located in an area that is categorized as zones 2B/3A by the Sunset Western Garden Book, Boise is a great place to grow all kinds of fruits, flowers and vegetables, including grapes, apples, tulips and tomatoes. Nearly every house with a yard has a garden of some sort. Though Boise is located in a desert region, the rivers that flow through the area have been tapped to irrigate the valley and many people still have ′flood irrigation′ right to their yards during the growing season (usually mid-April to mid October). During the fall and spring Boise usually gets a good deal of rain and most winters bring some snow which melts and helps to put water into the soil. Boise is also known as the "City of Trees" for the lush canopy that blankets the valley during the warmer months.
